Spanish Culture and Art club begins tomorrow in room 11 at lunch. Student's participating will attend the club every Thursday until the end of March.
Today's Learning: In English Language Arts we read the story "The Three Little Pigs." As we read the book we practiced " Checking For Understanding" by re-telling in our own words and looking at the pictures to remember what happened in the story. At first it was a bit tricky as some remembered parts and some parts were not in order of first, next and last. We then answered comprehension questions about the story like: Who ate the pea soup in the story? Which Pig made the straw house? etc. We found we could remember the story very well. Tomorrow, we will practice with cards to sequence and orally tell the story from beginning to end with our classmates. In Science, we continued to learn about "The Three Little Pig's" story. Srta. Sandra asked us an important question: Why did the brick house stay up? We thought about reasons like: - It is stronger than sticks and straw - He used cement to make it stick - The pig stacked the bricks - There were no holes like in the straw house and the stick house - The bricks were heavy - The First and Second pig rushed to build it and didn't do a good job In class we learned science vocabulary to talk about the brick house like: - Materials - Design - Weight - Connectors - Time -Structure - Strong - weak After our discussion, Srta. Sandra gave us another question: How would you design a house for the Three Little Pigs? Tomorrow students will draw a picture and write about how they would do it. Homework: Take some time today at home to brain storm some ideas using the science vocabulary learned at school today to answer the question. Please bring library books tomorrow for exchange.

Today we practiced addition with sums of 0-18. Student's attempted something new and did their first timed 5 minute practice drill to do as many questions possible within the given time. They were able to use math manipulatives (blocks, number lines, ten frames, fingers, visualizing bigger number, counting up from a number etc.) to solve the problems. We reviewed strategies before starting the drill. Students placed a star beside the problem they finished on in the 5 minute drill. Students are taking home with them their work to share with their parents. In class they were given extra time to complete the sheet (25 minutes). Please take some time to look over their work tonight and if not finished, please continue to work on it at home. If complete, take some time today to correct the questions they did in class together. Please discuss a goal for math at home that your child would like to work toward. It may be: finishing one more row on the next drill, learning to use a particular math strategy or manipulative, increasing accuracy (noticing plus sign when adding, checking answers), asking for help from teacher etc. School t-shirts and Hoodies
An order form was sent home today for a school fundraiser. Students can purchase school logo T-shirts for $10.00 and Hoodies for $30.00. The due date for this fundraiser is Friday, February 9th. Swimming Tomorrow is our last day of swimming. Please bring bathing suits and dress for the weather. Today's Learning Today was our second session of Literacy intervention. Please ask your child what strategy or work they did during the session. In Spanish, we worked on reading a short story in class. We used syllable strategy and also drew pictures to show understanding of vocabulary and verbs. Student's practiced reading the story with a friend and independently. Lastly, we answered comprehension questions about the story. Please practice reading it at home. |
