Jump Rope for Heart Our fundraising for the Heart and Stroke Foundation through Jump Rope for Heart has now concluded, and we would like to thank our Rosscarrock School community for their incredible support and generosity over the past few weeks. We are pleased to announce that we have now collected over $8000.00 in total pledges and donations. Fundraising prizes will be sent directly to the school, and these will be distributed to students in their classrooms shortly. Your efforts have made a difference. This Week's Math: What are number talks? A Number Talk is a 10 to 15 minute whole group mental math activity where students find the answer to a math problem in their heads, then share aloud the strategies they used to find that answer. This strategy helps to develop quality student discourse in a whole class setting as students are encouraged to explain their thinking, justify their reasoning, and make sense of each other’s strategies. During a Number Talk, the teacher steps away from his/her role of authority, and into the role of facilitator by asking students questions, recording student responses on the board, and encouraging students to make meaning out of the mathematics through verbal exchange. A Number Talk can be used to address gaps in student skills or understanding, to confront anticipated misconceptions, to surface multiple strategies, and/or as a formative assessment when introducing new concepts. Number Talks also build flexibility, accuracy and efficiency with numbers for all students. ,Number Talks Problems we have been working on this week: Skip Counting: Focus: Application of skip counting rule, 100 table, counting accuracy, problem solving Questions: How can you solve it? Strategies? Patterns? Complete the sequence: 3, 8, 13, 18,..... Complete the sequence: 32, 42, 52, 62,....... Complete the sequence: 13, 15, 17, 19,...... Doubles: Focus: Defining concept "to double," quantity, equal to, sum, doubling number, counting by 2's, grouping, representing numbers Questions: What does double mean? How many doubles do you see? What numbers are doubles? Later in the afternoon, Students showed how they doubled numbers using strategies they had learned in the morning. Students were working with numbers between 0 and 10. Some went beyond that and continued doubling numbers. As a class, student's decided to do a number challenge to see how hight of a number they could double. The Math challenge is open all day for students to walk up and add a double to the wall.

Jump Rope for Heart Our fundraising for the Heart and Stroke Foundation through Jump Rope for Heart will continue until Thursday May 31, and we continue to be amazed by the support and generosity of our Rosscarrock School community. As of today, we are pleased to announce that we have collected over $4500.00 in pledges and donations so far! If you are still returning pledge envelopes, please ensure that they arrive at the school by Thursday. All envelopes and collected donations will be picked up by the Heart and Stroke Foundation on Friday morning. Thank you Rosscarrock School! Library Today was our last day of Library for this school year. Some students forgot to return their books. Please return all library books to school. Students will continue with their home reading through the month of June. I am currently assessing students on their reading and hope to send new books home soon. Our Learning: Art In art we used our knowledge from what we have been learning about 3-D shapes in Science and Math to make paper sculptures. We explored different techniques using the 3-d paper techniques shown below. All students used their imagination and creativity to make different sculptural images they thought of while exploring the techniques. For example, some made amusement parks, others trapped doors, castles, parks, animals and many more things. Today students took home their sculptures. Anansi and the Pot of Wisdom In English, we have been working hard on our project. Before beginning making our story boards and re-telling the story in writing, students co-created checklists with Srta. Sandra. The checklists contain the criteria that students decided was important to show in their work. As they complete each phase of the project, students are checking the board to look that they have included all the steps. As students work on this project, they will receive feedback and will be given opportunity to improve their work. Math

(There are 24 students in our class. Each students has 2 hands. How many fingers in total are their in our class?) Hay 240 dedos in nuestra clase. / There are 240 fingers in our class. Students shared strategies of how they solved the problem this week. Math: Today we finished the Math problem we have been working on since last week: Hay 24 estudiantes en nuestra clase. Cada estudiante tiene dos manos.¿Cuántos dedos hay en total en nuestra clase? (There are 24 students in our class. Each students has 2 hands. How many fingers in total are their in our class?) There are a few students who did not finish the problem, please see my note and return when completed. Anansi Story Project: Students are finishing drawing their story boards from last week and some have begun to build their own books. Before making the book, students cut out the story board pictures and placed them in order before gluing them onto paper to make a book. The next step, once the book is created, students will then write the story to re-tell what happened. Monster Building Project: If there are volunteers available to come in for 1 hour to work with a few students to make the monsters, please contact me. We have a few that are close to being done while others are still have quite a bit to do. Any helping hands available to help would be much appreciated. Tomorrow May 18th there will be no school due to P.D. Day. On Monday it is Victoria Day, there will also be no school.
A gentle reminder that Scholastic accepts cheques and not cash for payment. Please make any cheques payable to them. This week we had classroom volunteers help us with making our Monsters. We will still need some volunteers to continue helping us next week. If available, on Tuesday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. , please contact me. Today's Learning: In Social Studies we continue to learn about community. We have learned today that there are three types of communities: urban, rural, and suburban. Today we made a class chart listing the characteristics found in each of these communities. In English, we have worked in groups to re-tell the story Anansi and the Pot of Wisdom. Students have begun to make individual story boards following criteria discussed in class. Students are learning to show comprehension as they add more details to the story board each time they re-tell the story. Here are a few pictures of this week's work. End of Year Library Book Return
In order to get prepare for the move to Glenmeadows, Mrs. O has requested that all library books be returned between June 4 and June 8th. Jump Rope for Heart This morning, we had our Heart & Stroke Foundation JUMP Rope For Heart assembly. We learned about the importance of heart health and the ways that skipping can provide a quick and effective fitness workout. Skipping activities will take place during Phys Ed classes, and we would like to offer the opportunity for students and families to fundraise online and collect donations for heart disease and stroke research. For students and families that may be interested in fundraising, students have received a donation envelope. For your convenience, there is also an online option for collecting donations. Today's Learning: Health We have been learning how to solve problems we encounter outside at recess. Today we used a real recess problem: " No, I don't want you to play. You always play together. I want to play with her only. You can play with someone else. I never get to play with her. " Sharing friends is sometimes hard. Today we tried to role play solutions to this problem. We came up with a few ideas. Please talk with your child at home about how they would go about finding a solution to this scenario. Math In Math, we have extended the question about how many fingers do 2 students have? 4 students have? etc. to a much bigger question: Hay 24 estudiantes en nuestra clase. Cada estudiante tiene dos manos. ¿Cuántos dedos hay en total en nuestra clase? (There are 24 students in our class. Each students has 2 hands. How many fingers in total are their in our class?) What are some strategies you could use to solve this problem? (You can post your answer to the blog or discuss at home. We will continue to work on this question tomorrow in Math.) On Monday we will have our annual Jump Rope for Heart Assembly for students.
A gentle reminder that on May 17th will be our Volunteer Tea and on May 18th is a P.D. day. There are a few families who have not paid for the field trip to Telus Sparks. Please contact myself or the office if you are not sure and we can confirm. The cost was $25. During our Telus Sparks field trip we attended two workshops: Sensory Wonders and Math in Motion. Some photos from Telus Sparks field trip earlier this week: A letter was sent home regarding head lice. Please read the information provided. Today's Learning: In English we have been learning about different types of book genres. This week we have been defining fiction and non-fiction. Over the next few weeks we will be further exploring how we can identify these two genres. On Tuesday we listened to the story Anansi and the Pot of Wisdom. Today we talked more about story tellers and their role in communities long ago before books were printed. After identifying the characters in the story and building comprehension, students worked with a partner to orally re-tell the story. Students can practice at home re-telling it to a family member. Telus Spark Field Trip Tomorrow
Tomorrow we will be going to our Telus Sparks field trip. It will be an all day field trip. Please pack a water bottle, morning snack and lunch. There will be no access to microwaves. On the field trip students will need to dress for the weather (tomorrow it might rain) and will only need to bring their lunch bag and water bottle. We will not be taking backpacks to the venue due to limited locker storage space. Students are encouraged to wear their Rosscarrock t-shirt or hoodie for safety as there may be multiple schools in the venue. Library We will have Library on Thursday morning. Please return books for exchange on that day. Home Reading As a result of our field trip tomorrow, please bring home reading to school on Wednesday instead of tomorrow. Today's Learning: We have begun to build our monsters this afternoon with a small group. Currently, we have no volunteers signed up this week to help. Next week, we will continue working on the project. In English we are starting a new story unit. Today students listened to a West African story called Anansi and the Pot of Wisdom. On Thursday we will work on re-telling the story orally in small groups and then will begin making story boards. |
