Today's Learning: This morning we introduced ourselves to our new reading buddies. We went to Sra. Robin's Kindergarten class to read our Three Little Pig stories. We will do buddy reading with Sra. Robin's class every Thursday. In Spanish, we have been practicing our reading strategies and answered comprehension questions about each story. The two stories are below: Story #1 Leo el León Leo es un león fuerte. In Math, we have been working on applying mental math strategies and "show your thinking." We are learning to solve the following problem. We will continue to solve it next week. Hay 5 dedos en una mano. ( A hand has 5 fingers.) ¿ Cuántos dedos hay en 2 manos? ( How many fingers do 2 hands have?) ¿ Cuántos dedos hay en 3 manos? ( How many fingers do 3 hands have?) ¿Cuántos dedos hay en 4 manos? (How many fingers do 4 hands have?) ¿ Cuántos dedos hay en 5 manos? (How many fingers do 5 hands have?) ¿ Cuántos dedos hay en 6 manos? ( How many fingers do 6 hands have?) Please return library books tomorrow for exchange.
We are still accepting book donations for World Book Day. Pick-up/ Drop- off Safety: The safety of our children getting to and from school continues to be a concern for all. We know that schedules are tight when getting our kids off to school, getting to work and then trying to get to after school activities. We want to stress that it only takes a second, one poor decision to change the course of a life or sadly as we have recently seen in the news, to even end one. We have witnessed several extremely unsafe events at the school, including a vehicle not yet stopped when a child exited, parents parking in a cross-walk creating an unsafe event for pedestrians as they weren't seen by a vehicle when try to cross, vehicles not yielding to pedestrians and parents double parking to let their children out and the children running between parked vehicles. These are only a few examples. Please continue to model safe behaviour for our children. This includes always using a cross-walk, not walking between vehicles, not dropping your children off prior to 8:10am or even parking a bit further from the school than you would like to ensure your child can exit the vehicle in a safe manner and not disrupt the flow of traffic. Thank you for all your continued support. Mrs. Fraser Today's Learning: Math: We showed our thinking to solve the following question: How many equations can you make with these numbers? 13, 5, 8 Some students did not finish and took home their work to complete. Please return tomorrow. Social Studies: Please continue to work on the Cultural Pizza project. It is due April 23. Today we continue to work on our Posters comparing communities in Honduras, Canada and Tanzania. Please take some time this week to ask your child about their work on the poster and what they find similar and different about each. Volunteers Required for:

This information was incorrectly communicated to parents. CADME, in conjunction with CBE organizers, had planned from the onset to make the in-person option available to parents, and it has now been corrected. We sincerely regret the inconvenience and miscommunication. Additionally, some parents have indicated that the link provided that should be live from April 11-24 is not functioning correctly. Please clear the internet cache and attempt again. This is simply a function of the website blocking robots. Currently, there are still more than 1000 seats remaining and families who have not yet purchased their first three tickets are requested to do so online or in person, as per the email circulated on Wednesday. Based on fire regulations at the Jubilee Auditorium, every person entering the concert hall must be in possession of a ticket, including toddlers. The momentum builds as we prepare for our second annual grand celebration of the Spanish Bilingual program in the Calgary Board of Education! Sincerely, Que Pasa Organizers Escuela Glenmeadows: Esculela Glenmeadows Society: Cinco de Mayo- Spring Fundraiser, May 5 at 6 pm All welcome please click on the attachement! Escuela Glenmeadows Cinco de Mayo Invitation.jpg Earth Day: This week we are collecting snack wrappers and graphing how much garbage we make at school. Today we counted 24 pieces of snack wrappers and yogurt containers. We brain stormed ways to make our lunches and snacks more environmentally friendly and learned that we can reduce waste if we try to place foods in plastic containers. We will be tracking our classroom waste this week through graphing and will continue discussions. Ms. Groen's class will be keeping track of each classroom's waste. The class with the least amount of waste collected will have a party in the learning commons. Today's Learning: In Social Studies we are learning about community. We learned about communities in Canada, Tanzania and Honduras. We have begun to make a poster in groups to share our learning and compare and contrast these different community groups. Some social studies vocabulary terms we have been learning: community, urban, rural, needs, wants, environment, shelter, belonging, and groups. Below is a video we have begun to watch until Honduras section. We will continue to watch the next part starting with India. http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/ssvs/movieLauncher.html?movie=smil/communities.smil If having difficult viewing the video. Please go to this website: http://www.learnalberta.ca Username: LA06 Password: 4105 Search: Communties around the world, around the corner Students received a letter about the Day of the Book to take home today. Please read over the information. Our Learning: This week we have been learning about "Wants" and "Needs" in Social studies. We defined "Wants" as things you do not need to live but enjoy having. We defined "Needs" as things we need to survive. In class we watched a video explaining the two concepts (please see below). Students then did a sorting activity. Those who did not complete took it home. Please finish and return to school. Wear a Jersey Day This Thursday, April 12, is wear a Jersey to school day. Student Voice club has asked students to wear Jerseys to honor the 15 young hockey players from the Humboldt Broncos Hockey team who lost their lives in the tragic bus accident this weekend. Those who do not have a jersey are invited to wear their school t-shirt in their honor. Our school flag will be placed at half-mast along with all CBE schools in the system in honor of these hockey players. Scholastic Scholastic is due tomorrow April, 10. Please return forms if paying by cheque and review online orders to ensure they have been completed. Cultural Pizza Project Some students took home red paper to help them get started on the project today. They shared with me they did not have materials to do it. Please let me know if this is the case and I can help provide materials. Que Pasa Que Pasa will be on May 7, 2018. The date was incorrect on the letter mailed home. Cultural Pizza Project
This project will be done at home and brought to school completed on April 23. Please work on it a little each day. As part of our learning about Family, next week, we will do show and tell. Students can bring and artifact from home (ie. pictures, doll, art, clothing etc. ) or tell a story about their family and culture. They can share more than once next week if they have more than one item to show. Today's Learning: Math In Math, we been practicing Fact Family problems. We are using blocks to represent and show our work and understanding. In class, we have cards similar to this one on the website http://www.mathcats.com/explore/factfamilies/addinfo.html that we are using as a center to practice fact families. Please view the website for information on how to solve fact family problems. It also teaches how you can make your own cards to practice at home. Science In Science, we have begun to plan for our "Monstruos." Those who have finished are sharing their building design with me and I am giving them feed back. Once we have all finished the process of designing and feedback and re-design we will begin building. Currently, we do have some recycling still left over in the classroom however, students have decided they would like to use different materials. If families have any materials at home they do not mind donating from the list, I'd greatly appreciate it. I have some materials in class but I am not sure I have enough. Some students have decided they would like to sew their monster others would like to build it with recycle materials and some a combination of both. Building List so far: - toilet rolls - bottle caps - red Licorice (1 bag) - Yarn (different colors for hair) - String/ thread - Burlap - Material/patches for sewing - cotton pads (make up ones) - googly eyes - felt - stuffing Social Studies In Social Studies we brain stormed ideas to answer the question: What is culture? in our unit on Family. Students gave the following responses in our discussion drawing on their experience of our Cultural Night and their own ideas and experiences: -language -cultural night -jewelry - singing -something you celebrate -hand made crafts -church -foods -dancing -art -Instruments -where you are from -where you live -where you were born -country flag - music - how we live -what you wear - take care of culture -sports -love your country - family - things you do (traditions, customs) -souvenirs - animals (beaver) - stories After our discussion, we watched a two videos of children and adults talking about culture. One was of a summer camp that brings together teenagers and children from around the world. They learn from each other's culture and celebrate diversity. Another was children explaining their own culture. Students were given a sheet called "My Culture" where they tried to do their best to write and draw what they knew about their family's culture. Students recognized that they did not know very much. They have taken the sheet home to help guide them in their next project called " Cultural Pizza." They can use their "My Culture" worksheet as a starting point to the project. They can use both sides of the paper as they collect information. I would like to encourage families to share stories with their child that may be linked to culture, try cooking tradition recipes, talk to grand parents etc. and explore together and make memories during this project. Its a beautiful time for students to get to know their roots, heritage, and learn about their family origin. I have included the project below. Students will have 2 weeks to complete it and will be due to the school on April 23. As part of their project, students will present their culture to the class. They will be given time in class to practice with several partners to get comfortable before standing in front of the class. ![]()

Welcome Back!
Today was our first day of school after Spring Break. Please remember tomorrow is our library day. Please return books for exchange. New word work (spelling) words are now posted on the blog until June. Grade 2 words have been added as bonus for the summer ( or for a challenge while working on this year's words) at the bottom of the post. Today's Learning: We began our morning sharing what exciting experiences we had over Spring Break. After sharing with the class, we made a word bank to help us with our ideas and spelling and wrote in our journals. After writing, students read their work aloud to classmates to share what they did over Spring Break with the class. In Spanish, we have learned vocabulary to describe a fish. We looked at tropical fish found in the ocean for our inspiration when coloring. Tomorrow we will continue to finish our drawings and labeling and practice speaking to each other about our Fish. Today's Spanish Vocabulary: PEZ OCEANO MAR LAGO RIO OJOS ESCAMAS BOCA ALETAS COLA BRANQUIAS PLANTAS GUSANO ALGAS PECES |
