Home Reading Tomorrow will complete our home reading program for the year. Please return home reading for inventory. Kindergarten Celebrations of Learning Assembly Last week we were invited by our Spanish Bilingual Kindergarten students to celebrate in their learning accomplishments. They showed our grade 1's what they have been learning in their class through different games and activities. Below are a few pictures of our class learning how to play. GrandParent Project in Social Studies We have had two grandparents visit our classroom to share what it was like growing up in Rural communities. We learned many things about rural communities in the past. Below are a few photos. Thank you to all our grandparents who are so lovingly supporting our understanding about the past with their memories and stories. Science
Our Sunflowers are growing! Today we made some observations about our plants and measured how high they grew.

Sports Day
Dear Families, We are looking for enthusiastic parent volunteers to help run a station during our Sports Day. Our Sports Day will be held outdoors on June 26 from 12:37 pm-2:50 pm. If you have a current police security clearance on file with the school and you are willing to volunteer, please follow the link to sign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0c4dadaf23a6f58-sports In the event of inclement weather we will move and modify the events to occur inside. Volunteers will be emailed the morning of the event if plans change. Thank you for your continued support. Brenna Fraser Today's Learning: In science, we learned about the life cycle of a sun flower. As we learn to take care of our sunflower plant, we are recording our observations of the changes we are noticing as our plant grows. In gym, we have been enjoying going outside and learning how to play kick ball with Mr. Patrick. We are learning to pass the ball and take turns. In Math, we learned about re-grouping during our numbers talk using the 10 frames below. Here are our class observations: 1) Move 1 dot in the first ten frame next to the 3 dots 8+8=16 2) Keep the dot in the first ten frame beside the 3 dots to make a group of 4. Make 4 groups of 4. 4+4+4+4=16 3) Move the two dots in the first frame to the second frame to make a group of 10. 10 +6=16 What we know about re-grouping. What is it? - when you move dots from one place to another to make new groups - it helps to make more equations to come up with solutions - picturing numbers, you have to imagine them moving Upcoming Spirit Days at Rosscarrock On Wednesday, June 13th Rosscarrock school will be having a literature spirit day. On this day your child is invited to dress up a character from their favourite book. Please remember not to send your child wearing a mask. We can’t wait to see all the many book characters! On Wednesday, June 20th Rosscarrock school will be having a sports spirit day. On this day your child is invited to dress up as their favourite athlete, or dress in a way that represents their favourite sport (hockey, dancing, football, gymnastics, etc.). We can’t wait to see all the athletes! Social Studies Grandparent Project We will begin a new Grandparent Project over the next few weeks. Our new project will be learning about the past and present and our community. We would love to have grandparents visit our classroom to hear from them about what it was like for them to grow up in Alberta or their country of origin. In doing so, we hope to bring grand children and their grandparents together for a unique conversation that will bring them close but also will give an opportunity for students to hear stories about what it was like to live when their grandparent was in grade 1 or 6 years old. As part of our learning, we will be making comparisons between our own present grade 1 student lives with those of grandparents. As a final project, students will write to their future grandchild what it was like to be in grade 1 2017-18. We would love to have the participation of as many grandparents as possible; however, we are aware that some grandparents live far away or that unfortunately are not longer with you. Under these circumstances, you may send a video of the grandparent that lives far away or a video of you talking about the late grandparent. We would like to ask that ONE grandparent in your family be chosen to share with our classroom their stories. We would like to limit grandparents to one per family so that we will be able to have more families represented. We wish to recognize the immense value of our student;s grandparents and show appreciation for all the work they did and still do in our community, country and globally. Thank you kindly. Some helpful topics to help guide grandparent presentations about being a young boy or girl in grade 1: 1) favorite games and toys 2) special books 3) school 4) chores 5) foods eaten, snacks that were favorites or special treats 6) rural or urban community 7) clothing- ie. dresses hand made etc 8) other forms of entertainment- t.v., photography, 9) Special family trips 10) Craft The visit/presentation will be 15 minutes in length between June 13- June 21. It would be greatly appreciated if the visiting grandparent brought an artifact (toy, book, souvenir, photographs, or short video clip) so students can visualize and gain perspective. Please contact me to inform me of the date the grandparent wishes to come so we can coordinate the time. Thank you! Today's Learning: This afternoon was a special day! Our classroom volunteers helped us to plant sunflower seeds. This week we have been learning how to harvest sunflowers and all about planting. Today we got to put our knowledge to work as we decided how much soil, water and seeds to plant. Over the next few weeks, we will be learning how to grow our sunflowers and care for them. We will also make observations in our notebooks. We also continued to work on our monster building and painting this afternoon. We also worked on getting plant presentations ready too by adding more information to our posters. In Spanish, Srta. Sandra told us two funny stories about a mouse and a snail using picture books. We then got to try re-telling the stories in a circle. We took turns adding a sentence about the pictures in each story. We even tried making up our own stories with friends using the special picture books that opened up to reveal a new character. They're really cool! . In Math, we continue to learn about doubles, doubles +1 and near doubles. In our number talks this week, we had a very important question that needed answering! After students viewed the 10 frame below, one student stated 3+5 is a near double. Some students did not agree with the statement. So, we spent some time in class working to prove it if the statement was true or not. Students proved that the statement was not true through reasoning by:
1) defining near double as one more than a double 2) drawing a number line that showed that to get to the number 5, your would have to jump 2 spaces. You can not jump one big jump to get to 5 from the number 3. 3) 3+1=4 therefore 3 and 4 are near doubles Scholastic Orders due tomorrow June 8, 2018
Today's Learning: We have been learning about plants in science and are preparing presentations to share what we have been learning in class with a partner. Students created their own list of questions that they feel confident they can answer about what they have learned about plants so far: 1. How they grow/what do they need to grow? 2. What are the parts of a plant 3. What do plants do? for people? for animals? 4. What do plants eat? 5. Do all plants eat the same kind of food? 6. Where do you find plants in the world? 7. What kinds of plants are there? Students will continue working on the presentation project with a partner tomorrow. Below are a few pictures and notes sharing their understanding. Please continue to return library books to school.
Crazy Hat day Wednesday June 6, 2018 Today's Learning: Number Talk: Concepts-Near Doubles, Doubles +1 Look at the following 10 frames. Focus Questions: What do you notice about the two frames? Are they doubles? why or why not? What is different? What is the Same? What is a near double? How can you solve it? What other near doubles can you think of? |
