Butterfield Acres Field trip On Friday, June 22nd students will attend an all day field trip to Butterfield Acres. Forms for the field trip were due on June 14th. There are a few students who have not yet turned in field trip forms and money. Please return them to the school as soon as possible. Home Reading Tomorrow will complete our home reading program for the year. Please return home reading for inventory. Kindergarten Celebrations of Learning Assembly Last week we were invited by our Spanish Bilingual Kindergarten students to celebrate in their learning accomplishments. GrandParent Project in Social Studies We have had two grandparents visit our classroom to share what it was like growing up in Rural communities. Sports Day
Dear Families, We are looking for enthusiastic parent volunteers to help run a station during our Sports Day. Our Sports Day will be held outdoors on June 26 from 12:37 pm-2:50 pm. As we learn to take care of our sunflower plant, we are recording our observations of the changes we are noticing as our plant grows. In gym, we have been enjoying going outside and learning how to play kick ball with Mr. Patrick. We are learning to pass the ball and take turns. In Math, we learned about re-grouping during our numbers talk using the 10 frames below. Here are our class observations: 1) Move 1 dot in the first ten frame next to the 3 dots 8+8=16 2) Keep the dot in the first ten frame beside the 3 dots to make a group of 4. Make 4 groups of 4. 4+4+4+4=16 3) Move the two dots in the first frame to the second frame to make a group of 10. 10 +6=16 What we know about re-grouping. What is it? - when you move dots from one place to another to make new groups - it helps to make more equations to come up with solutions - picturing numbers, you have to imagine them moving Upcoming Spirit Days at Rosscarrock On Wednesday, June 13th Rosscarrock school will be having a literature spirit day. On this day your child is invited to dress up a character from their favourite book. Please remember not to send your child wearing a mask. We can’t wait to see all the many book characters! On Wednesday, June 20th Rosscarrock school will be having a sports spirit day. On this day your child is invited to dress up as their favourite athlete, or dress in a way that represents their favourite sport (hockey, dancing, football, gymnastics, etc.). We can’t wait to see all the athletes! Social Studies Grandparent Project We will begin a new Grandparent Project over the next few weeks. Our new project will be learning about the past and present and our community. We would love to have grandparents visit our classroom to hear from them about what it was like for them to grow up in Alberta or their country of origin. In doing so, we hope to bring grand children and their grandparents together for a unique conversation that will bring them close but also will give an opportunity for students to hear stories about what it was like to live when their grandparent was in grade 1 or 6 years old. As part of our learning, we will be making comparisons between our own present grade 1 student lives with those of grandparents. As a final project, students will write to their future grandchild what it was like to be in grade 1 2017-18. We would love to have the participation of as many grandparents as possible; however, we are aware that some grandparents live far away or that unfortunately are not longer with you. Under these circumstances, you may send a video of the grandparent that lives far away or a video of you talking about the late grandparent. We would like to ask that ONE grandparent in your family be chosen to share with our classroom their stories. We would like to limit grandparents to one per family so that we will be able to have more families represented. We wish to recognize the immense value of our student;s grandparents and show appreciation for all the work they did and still do in our community, country and globally. Thank you kindly. Some helpful topics to help guide grandparent presentations about being a young boy or girl in grade 1: 1) favorite games and toys 2) special books 3) school 4) chores 5) foods eaten, snacks that were favorites or special treats 6) rural or urban community 7) clothing- ie. dresses hand made etc 8) other forms of entertainment- t.v., photography, 9) Special family trips 10) Craft The visit/presentation will be 15 minutes in length between June 13- June 21. It would be greatly appreciated if the visiting grandparent brought an artifact (toy, book, souvenir,photographs, or short video clip) so students can visualize and gain perspective. Please contact me to inform me of the date the grandparent wishes to come so we can coordinate the time. Thank you! Today's Learning: This afternoon was a special day! Our classroom volunteers helped us to plant sunflower seeds. This week we have been learning how to harvest sunflowers and all about planting. Today we got to put our knowledge to work as we decided how much soil, water and seeds to plant. Over the next few weeks, we will be learning how to grow our sunflowers and care for them. We will also make observations in our notebooks. We also continued to work on our monster building and painting this afternoon. We also worked on getting plant presentations ready too by adding more information to our posters. In Spanish, Srta. Sandra told us two funny stories about a mouse and a snail using picture books. We then got to try re-telling the stories in a circle. We took turns adding a sentence about the pictures in each story. We even tried making up our own stories with friends using the special picture books that opened up to reveal a new character. They're really cool! . In Math, we continue to learn about doubles, doubles +1 and near doubles. In our number talks this week, we had a very important question that needed answering! After students viewed the 10 frame below, one student stated 3+5 is a near double. Some students did not agree with the statement. So, we spent some time in class working to prove it if the statement was true or not. Students proved that the statement was not true through reasoning by:
1) defining near double as one more than a double 2) drawing a number line that showed that to get to the number 5, your would have to jump 2 spaces. You can not jump one big jump to get to 5 from the number 3. 3) 3+1=4 therefore 3 and 4 are near doubles Scholastic Orders due tomorrow June 8, 2018
Today's Learning: We have been learning about plants in science and are preparing presentations to share what we have been learning in class with a partner. Students created their own list of questions that they feel confident they can answer about what they have learned about plants so far: 1. How they grow/what do they need to grow? 2. What are the parts of a plant 3. What do plants do? for people? for animals? 4. What do plants eat? 5. Do all plants eat the same kind of food? 6. Where do you find plants in the world? 7. What kinds of plants are there? Students will continue working on the presentation project with a partner tomorrow. Below are a few pictures and notes sharing their understanding. Jump Rope for Heart Our fundraising for the Heart and Stroke Foundation through Jump Rope for Heart has now concluded, and we would like to thank our Rosscarrock School community for their incredible support and generosity over the past few weeks. We are pleased to announce that we have now collected over $8000.00 in total pledges and donations. Fundraising prizes will be sent directly to the school, and these will be distributed to students in their classrooms shortly. Your efforts have made a difference. This Week's Math: What are number talks? A Number Talk is a 10 to 15 minute whole group mental math activity where students find the answer to a math problem in their heads, then share aloud the strategies they used to find that answer. This strategy helps to develop quality student discourse in a whole class setting as students are encouraged to explain their thinking, justify their reasoning, and make sense of each other’s strategies. During a Number Talk, the teacher steps away from his/her role of authority, and into the role of facilitator by asking students questions, recording student responses on the board, and encouraging students to make meaning out of the mathematics through verbal exchange. A Number Talk can be used to address gaps in student skills or understanding, to confront anticipated misconceptions, to surface multiple strategies, and/or as a formative assessment when introducing new concepts. Number Talks also build flexibility, accuracy and efficiency with numbers for all students. ,Number Talks Problems we have been working on this week: Skip Counting: Focus: Application of skip counting rule, 100 table, counting accuracy, problem solving Questions: How can you solve it? Strategies? Patterns? Complete the sequence: 3, 8, 13, 18,..... Complete the sequence: 32, 42, 52, 62,....... Complete the sequence: 13, 15, 17, 19,...... Doubles: Focus: Defining concept "to double," quantity, equal to, sum, doubling number, counting by 2's, grouping, representing numbers Questions: What does double mean? How many doubles do you see? What numbers are doubles? Later in the afternoon, Students showed how they doubled numbers using strategies they had learned in the morning. Students were working with numbers between 0 and 10. Some went beyond that and continued doubling numbers. As a class, student's decided to do a number challenge to see how hight of a number they could double. The Math challenge is open all day for students to walk up and add a double to the wall.
Jump Rope for Heart Our fundraising for the Heart and Stroke Foundation through Jump Rope for Heart will continue until Thursday May 31, and we continue to be amazed by the support and generosity of our Rosscarrock School community. As of today, we are pleased to announce that we have collected over $4500.00 in pledges and donations so far! If you are still returning pledge envelopes, please ensure that they arrive at the school by Thursday. All envelopes and collected donations will be picked up by the Heart and Stroke Foundation on Friday morning. Thank you Rosscarrock School! Library Today was our last day of Library for this school year. Some students forgot to return their books. Please return all library books to school. Students will continue with their home reading through the month of June. I am currently assessing students on their reading and hope to send new books home soon. Our Learning: Art In art we used our knowledge from what we have been learning about 3-D shapes in Science and Math to make paper sculptures. We explored different techniques using the 3-d paper techniques shown below. All students used their imagination and creativity to make different sculptural images they thought of while exploring the techniques. For example, some made amusement parks, others trapped doors, castles, parks, animals and many more things. Today students took home their sculptures. Anansi and the Pot of Wisdom In English, we have been working hard on our project. Before beginning making our story boards and re-telling the story in writing, students co-created checklists with Srta. Sandra. The checklists contain the criteria that students decided was important to show in their work. As they complete each phase of the project, students are checking the board to look that they have included all the steps. As students work on this project, they will receive feedback and will be given opportunity to improve their work. Math
In Math we have worked this week on solving the problem: Hay 24 estudiantes en nuestra clase. Cada estudiante tiene dos manos.¿Cuántos dedos hay en total en nuestra clase? (There are 24 students in our class. Each students has 2 hands. How many fingers in total are their in our class?) Hay 240 dedos in nuestra clase. / There are 240 fingers in our class. Students shared strategies of how they solved the problem this week.
