Dear Parents and Guardians, We are getting closer to our second annual Cultural Night! If you are interested in participating but misplaced the pink form with the information you can still participate. We are looking for parents who would like to show their wonderful heritage and culture by sharing samples of food, toys, artifacts or pictures with the rest of our students, parents and teachers. The event will be held on February 22 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. School will provide tables, cutlery and stationary items to help to set up the presentations. Please let Mrs. Fraser ([email protected]) know if you would like to participate as well as with the country you will represent. We will be sending out more information with details to the parents who would like to participate. Thank you to the parents who already responded. Greetings, The Cultural Committee Today's Learning: In Math, we continued to learn about 2-d shapes by identifying how many sides, faces and corners. We built the shapes using different materials. We learned some materials were easier to connect some shapes together while others were not. We compared our designs to the chart we created to know if we used the same number of sides. Here are a few pictures of our buildings. Homework: Review how many sides, corners, and faces the following shapes have: square, circle, rectangle, pentagon, octagon, oval, heart, star, diamond. Please remember to bring swimming suits tomorrow. Here are a few more pictures of our swim lessons.

In Math we are learning about Shapes. We are identifying how many sides, faces, and corners a 2-d shape has using Spanish vocabulary to describe. In Social Studies we have begun to talk learn about Family. We discussed the question: What is a family? After making our guesses, we looked at photos of families and re-evaluated our ideas of how we defined family. We watched the video ( https://youtu.be/POofYM4ZiKg) to help us with our thinking. Today was our first day of swimming. Please remember to bring swimming items tomorrow. Here are a few pictures. Cultural Night
Please return Cultural Night participation forms by January 30th. Please ask if you have any questions or would like help from me. Last year we had a beautiful night of celebration of culture and community at Rosscarrock school. I would like to encourage families to attend this special evening in February as an attendee or participant. It is a great way to form connections with other families and also learn about the unique cultures in our school. Salvador Dali Project This week we completed a journal entry to tell what we have learned about Salvador Dali. We also studied and analyzed the painting "The Persistence of Memory." We looked at the shades and colors he used as well as how the sunlight is shining from one angle. We also looked for secret hidden objects like the ants on the pocket watch and the face of an old man hidden in what appears to be melted cheese or rock. We made predictions about the meaning behind the symbols of the melting clock and the sleeping man. After discussing we concluded that the clock meant time was melting away or passing by and made connections between the words: memory and time. Students then worked to create their own interpretation of "The Persistence of Memory" using similar lines and shapes and explored surrealism by creating their own pieces of fantasy to add to their work. They used dark and light coloring techniques to mimic the sun shining. Rosscarrock School and the parents of School Council would like to host our second annual Cultural Night. Students (with the help of their parents) have the opportunity to represent different countries and participate by bringing food, talent, decorations and costumes.
We are looking for parents who would like to share their culture with other students in the school by partaking in this event. The Cultural Night will be held at Rosscarrock School on Thursday, February 22 from 6:30pm-8pm. We are hoping to build on the participation and positive energy that was generated from this event last year. School Council is looking for parents to represent different countries and indicate how you would like to participate. If you are interested, please fill out the form below and you will receive more information in the near future. Our intent is to collect all the information from the people who want to participate, divide them into countries and have them organize a “booth” with food, talent, costumes, and decorations with the help of Council. Today students watched the Canadian Pacific Railway Show. The production told the story of Canada's railway construction through Canada and the hardships and victories of making Roger's pass. Please take some time to ask your child what they learned during the performance.
Please bring home reading tomorrow. Student reading levels will be updated when exchanged. A gentle reminder that Special Lunch is this Friday.
Today in Math we practiced Subtraction using numbers between 0 and 12. We talked about the difference between addition and subtraction symbols and explored strategies for solving problems like: using fingers, number lines, blocks, 10-frames, tally, and drawing pictures. We also learned how to line up our numbers when subtracting vertically. Today in Spanish Students worked on our Monster project. They are finishing describing their monster and are working on editing and making a good copy of their writing. The next task will involve designing a monster and making a plan with materials and deciding how to construct it.
During English literacy (Daily 5), Students have reached a stamina of 20 minutes of reading and writing! In class we are celebrating student work at the end of our centers. Students share and read aloud journal entries to the class and can read aloud books they are practicing. For example, to share tricky words they can now read and tell which strategy they used. This week students are making individual writing goals to work towards becoming a better writer. Students brainstormed and identified what good writing looks like through discussion. Srta. Sandra recorded the information students gave and together we decided what a 1,2 ,3 and 4 piece of writing would include. Next, students took their own writing journals and wrote their name on the target indicating where they thought they might be currently. Students began to identify what is missing from their writing and areas for improvement. Below are a few pictures of their thinking and their hard work. Swimming Field Trip: Some families have not yet made the $30.00 payment for swimming. Please send money this week. Our school is not set up for online payment. You may write a cheque to the school or pay in cash.
Library: We will resume with regular library schedule this week. Please return books on Wednesday. Our learning commons is looking great! A few more details will be added this week and will be ready for students to use beginning on Thursday. Thank you to parents who participated in helping set up and gave of their time to help create this unique learning space. Home Reading: Please return home reading tomorrow. I am still assessing students reading levels. I am hoping to finish this week. Please continue to read using Raz kids in both languages and also current level home reading books. Today's learning and Spanish Art Culture Project: In Social Studies we are learning about our world and how we belong to it. We have learned definitions like: rights, responsibilities, groups, community, and belong. Today using technology we looked at different maps to learn where we live and how we belong. We identified the name of our city, province, country, continent, and world/planet. We made an activity book to show our learning. Please take some time tonight to continue looking at maps and ask your child if they can tell you each of these and identify them correctly. In Spanish, we have been focusing on developing strategies for reading. We have practiced breaking words into syllables. We practiced with activities to break the words into parts. Students have begun to demonstrate their skills by clapping out words into syllables. We have been learning about Spanish culture through art. Last week, we learned about Salvador Dali. We looked at a map to learn where he was born in Spain. We also learned some interesting facts about him. For example, he was a painter, sculptor, film maker (he worked with Walt Disney to create the movie Destino), jewelry designer, book illustrator, and also worked in theater. He was also very famous for his mustache for many reasons. Ask your child to tell you a story they learned about his mustache. Last week we created a portrait of Salvador Dali after collecting many facts and learning about him as an artist. Swimming Field Trip Volunteers: We currently have 3 female volunteers and 0 males to help volunteer on the field trip from the information sent back by students. If more parents can volunteer it would be greatly appreciated to help with change rooms. Thank you kindly for the giving of your time.
Word Work (Spelling): New words have been posted until March. Please continue practicing. Today's Learning: English Language Arts: We have been learning and practicing good habits for writing through the Daily 5 program. This helps us build our stamina so we can complete our work and become a better writer. We have been practicing: - Finding a quiet spot - use a whisper voice to sound out words so others around us can also hear their own letter sounds - Getting all materials ( pencils, strategy tools ie finger spacer, sound charts etc) - Eyes looking at our notebook - Working the whole time - Finishing previous day's work if not done - G.U.M. ( When stuck on spelling a word, Guess- try your best to spell it, U- underline it so when meeting with the teacher we can ask her about it, M- move on to the next word so we can continue to write our ideas). Sometimes thinking of ideas to write about can be a bit tricky. We worked together as a class to think of writing ideas. Srta. Sandra wrote our ideas down to help us remember. Here they are: - Make a story with a beginning, middle, end. - Write a list (favorite foods, toys, animals etc) - Write about the weekend, upcoming holiday, special event like birthday or celebration - Write a letter using Dear____ to a friend, family member etc - Write about the day (what we are learning, play dates, recess etc) - Write about family or friends Homework: Brian storm at home other ideas/ topics you can write about and share with the class tomorrow. |
