We made Paper poppies for our Remembrance Day assembly tomorrow. This Friday at 10:45 am we will hold our Remembrance Day Assembly in the school gymnasium. All are welcome to attend.
On Friday each child will receive a poppy to wear (with the exception of students who do not participate due to religios reasons). If you/your child is able to contribute to the Millennium Brach # 289 Royal Canadian Legion, would be greatly appreciated. Students who do not participate in this assembly due to religious reasons will be given alternative educational tasks in the library under the supervision of a teacher. Stephen's Backpack Starting today our school will be undertaking a project called, “Stephen’s Backpack”. We are looking for volunteers to help organize and sort donated items in the afternoons Nov 8-16th and then assistance setting up the toy sale on Nov 20th (morning or afternoon). Who named us? and how our parents chose our names. Please take some time tonight and share with your child the story of how they got their name. Tomorrow students will share their stories with the class. In Math we played a clapping game to count by 10's in Spanish. We noticed another pattern! All the numbers have a zero and they count up: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Some of use discovered using a number line that we can count 10 spaces and skip to the next number. Count by 10's : 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 100 Reminder: Please return library books tomorrow.
Today we noticed during calendar that numbers have patterns on the 100's chart. We discovered that when looking at the rows of numbers from top to bottom that the first number in each row goes from 1-9 and the second humber is the same ie. 2 3 12 13 22 23 32 33 This helped us solve today's math problem of the day because we can use the first digit and compare it to the second number to know which one is bigger or smaller. ie. 32, 62 3 is smaller than 6, so the bigger number is 62. Homework: Can you practice this strategy with our math problem of the day? ![]() Message From Student Voice: Starting today our school will be undertaking a project called, “Stephen’s Backpack”. Stephen’s Backpack Project is about giving the gift of hope. Stephen is a little boy with Autism who wanted to help all the homeless children of Calgary. He created a project where he, with the help of others, would fill backpacks with essentials and toys for children living on the street. His wish is to give children the gift of hope and Student Voice is going to help lead this project. From November 7, 2017-November 17, 2017 we are asking families to bring gently used toys and books to donate to a Toy Sale. This toy sale will provide the funds to purchase the items for the backpacks. We will store all these items in the school until the sale. On November 21, we will have an all-day Toy Sale. This is where all students, during their gym time will have a chance to go shopping. Items will vary in price (up to $10.00), and all the money will go toward filling the backpacks. Thank you for your support. Student Voice Today we played a math game. Srta. Sandra gave us cards with numbers on them. We placed ourselves in order from biggest to smallest and smallest to biggest. For example, 9, 1,4,6,5, 11. We also played another game using cards: two people stood up with numbers and we chose which number was bigger or smaller between the two. For example, 8 and 13. Which one is bigger? or 11 and 10 which one is smaller. In our math notebooks we practiced writing the problem by copying the words and numbers from the board. Next we solved the problem by circling which one we though was bigger. Some strategies we used: 1) numbers close to 0 are smaller 2) number close to 100 are bigger 3) counting the quantity for each one Homework: practice these questions or find other numbers on the 100 chart and make your own math problem. Today was Picture Re-take Day and Class Photos. However, our class photo pictures have been postponed to be taken a later date. The photographer will return another day to do all Class Photos. Parents will be informed of the date by the school.
Today we discussed the parts of a story in more detail using Big Pumpkin as our model. We defined character, setting, problem, solution and conclusion. We identified the parts of the Big Pumpkin story and made a chart to help organize our ideas. We then went back to our story boards and retold the story to ourselves adding more details by noticing the parts of the story we were missing. We have been doing Math Problems of the Day after our calendar. Today's math problem of the day was as follows: 1) __18__ 2)__35__ 3)__14__ 4)__81__ 5)__76__ Bonus: Practice again solving the problems at home. Do you understand that numbers have an order? ![]() Happy 1st of November! There will be Special Lunch tomorrow. Today Srta. Sandra told us a story called Big Pumpkin. Srta. Sandra used her voice, actions and words to tell the story with no pictures. We then learned the story and practiced re-telling the same story together with her help. It went a little like this: There once was a witch who wanted to make pumpkin pie, so she planted a seed and it grew and it grew until it became a big orange pumpkin. The Witch said " Oh me, Oh my! I want to make pumpkin pie but the pumpkin is in the ground." So she decided to pull on the vines to get it out. She tugged and she pulled and she pulled and she tugged until, she fell, splat! The pumpkin stayed in the ground. Along came the Ghost and he said, "What's wrong?" The Witch said, " oh me, oh my, I want to make pumpkin pie but the pumpkin is in the ground." The ghost said, " I am bigger and I am stronger, let me try!" So the Ghost tugged and pulled and tugged and pulled until he felt to the ground, splat! The pumpkin stayed in the ground. Along came the Vampire and he said, " What's wrong?" The Witch said, " Oh me, oh my! I want to make pumpkin pie but the pumpkin is in the ground." The Vampire said, " I am bigger and I am stronger, let me try!" So the Vampire tugged and pulled and tugged and pulled until he felt to the ground, splat! The pumpkin stayed in the ground. I want to make pumpkin pie but the pumpkin is in the ground." The Bat said, " I am bigger and stronger let me try!" The Mummy laughed "hahahaha" The Vampire laughed " hahaha you're too small" The Ghost laughed "hahaha" The Witch laughed and said, "hahaha oh me, oh my! I want to make pumpkin pie but the pumpkin is in the ground." The Bat said, " I have an idea!!!! Lets all try!" So the Bat pulled the Mummy and the Mummy pulled the Vampire. The Vampire pulled the Ghost and the Ghost pulled the Witch. All of a sudden the pumpkin came out and it rolled down the hill to the Witches house. The Witch said, "oh me, oh my! the pumpkin came out and rolled down the hill." They all ran down the hill to the Witches house where she made pumpkin pie. She gave a piece to the Ghost, Vampire, Mummy, and Bat who said "mmmm that's delicious. When will you make another pie." The witch said, "oh my!" After we learned the story, we practiced in groups with each other. We chose our characters but realized we had a problem. We needed a Narrator to our story. Some of us chose to all be Narrators and some of our groups chose to have one person be the Narrator. We were brave and practiced what we learned to the class. Srta. Sandra taught us an important word: Feedback. Feed back tells us what we did really well and what we can do better. We can give Feedback using starter sentences: I Like____ or also I think____. After receiving our feedback from classroom peers, we learned what we did well and how we can do better. This week we will be learning how to improve our story telling by reviewing the video Srta. Sandra took of our story telling, looking at the parts of a story, and working on our voice. Here is some feedback we gave to each other: Group #1 I think you forgot the Mummy. I think you forgot the Vampire. I think you could have said Vampire. I think you can use louder voices. I like the actions. They were good. I liked it when you fell down. Group #2 I liked that you did the story really good. I think you can act a bit better. I like when you fell because you fell at the same time. I think you need to talk a little louder. I couldn't hear the Bat. Group #3 I think you can show what you are (character) a bit better. I liked how you did the actions. I think you need to be a bit louder. Group #4 I did not know who was the Bat. I think you did the pumpkin really good. I think you did a great job going down the hill part. I think you can stop falling when it's other's turn. I think you can do the actions a bit better. Group #5 I liked how they ran down the hill. I think they can speak louder. I think you did a really good job on the Ghost. I think you can do better to show who you are (character). I could not understand. I think there was too much jumping. I liked how you speak loud. Group #6 I liked when you stirred the pot. I think they should work on falling. I think they should speak a bit louder. I think you can show your actions. I like when you were running. I liked when all of you pulled the pumpkin out. |
