Upcoming Spirit Days at Rosscarrock On Wednesday, June 13th Rosscarrock school will be having a literature spirit day. On this day your child is invited to dress up a character from their favourite book. Please remember not to send your child wearing a mask. We can’t wait to see all the many book characters! On Wednesday, June 20th Rosscarrock school will be having a sports spirit day. On this day your child is invited to dress up as their favourite athlete, or dress in a way that represents their favourite sport (hockey, dancing, football, gymnastics, etc.). We can’t wait to see all the athletes! Social Studies Grandparent Project We will begin a new Grandparent Project over the next few weeks. Our new project will be learning about the past and present and our community. We would love to have grandparents visit our classroom to hear from them about what it was like for them to grow up in Alberta or their country of origin. In doing so, we hope to bring grand children and their grandparents together for a unique conversation that will bring them close but also will give an opportunity for students to hear stories about what it was like to live when their grandparent was in grade 1 or 6 years old. As part of our learning, we will be making comparisons between our own present grade 1 student lives with those of grandparents. As a final project, students will write to their future grandchild what it was like to be in grade 1 2017-18. We would love to have the participation of as many grandparents as possible; however, we are aware that some grandparents live far away or that unfortunately are not longer with you. Under these circumstances, you may send a video of the grandparent that lives far away or a video of you talking about the late grandparent. We would like to ask that ONE grandparent in your family be chosen to share with our classroom their stories. We would like to limit grandparents to one per family so that we will be able to have more families represented. We wish to recognize the immense value of our student;s grandparents and show appreciation for all the work they did and still do in our community, country and globally. Thank you kindly. Some helpful topics to help guide grandparent presentations about being a young boy or girl in grade 1: 1) favorite games and toys 2) special books 3) school 4) chores 5) foods eaten, snacks that were favorites or special treats 6) rural or urban community 7) clothing- ie. dresses hand made etc 8) other forms of entertainment- t.v., photography, 9) Special family trips 10) Craft The visit/presentation will be 15 minutes in length between June 13- June 21. It would be greatly appreciated if the visiting grandparent brought an artifact (toy, book, souvenir, photographs, or short video clip) so students can visualize and gain perspective. Please contact me to inform me of the date the grandparent wishes to come so we can coordinate the time. Thank you!
