Today's Learning: This afternoon was a special day! Our classroom volunteers helped us to plant sunflower seeds. This week we have been learning how to harvest sunflowers and all about planting. Today we got to put our knowledge to work as we decided how much soil, water and seeds to plant. Over the next few weeks, we will be learning how to grow our sunflowers and care for them. We will also make observations in our notebooks. We also continued to work on our monster building and painting this afternoon. We also worked on getting plant presentations ready too by adding more information to our posters. In Spanish, Srta. Sandra told us two funny stories about a mouse and a snail using picture books. We then got to try re-telling the stories in a circle. We took turns adding a sentence about the pictures in each story. We even tried making up our own stories with friends using the special picture books that opened up to reveal a new character. They're really cool! . In Math, we continue to learn about doubles, doubles +1 and near doubles. In our number talks this week, we had a very important question that needed answering! After students viewed the 10 frame below, one student stated 3+5 is a near double. Some students did not agree with the statement. So, we spent some time in class working to prove it if the statement was true or not. Students proved that the statement was not true through reasoning by:
1) defining near double as one more than a double 2) drawing a number line that showed that to get to the number 5, your would have to jump 2 spaces. You can not jump one big jump to get to 5 from the number 3. 3) 3+1=4 therefore 3 and 4 are near doubles
