Today's Learning:
Math: Today we finished the Math problem we have been working on since last week: Hay 24 estudiantes en nuestra clase. Cada estudiante tiene dos manos.¿Cuántos dedos hay en total en nuestra clase? (There are 24 students in our class. Each students has 2 hands. How many fingers in total are their in our class?) There are a few students who did not finish the problem, please see my note and return when completed. Anansi Story Project: Students are finishing drawing their story boards from last week and some have begun to build their own books. Before making the book, students cut out the story board pictures and placed them in order before gluing them onto paper to make a book. The next step, once the book is created, students will then write the story to re-tell what happened. Monster Building Project: If there are volunteers available to come in for 1 hour to work with a few students to make the monsters, please contact me. We have a few that are close to being done while others are still have quite a bit to do. Any helping hands available to help would be much appreciated.

A gentle reminder that Scholastic accepts cheques and not cash for payment. Please make any cheques payable to them. This week we had classroom volunteers help us with making our Monsters. We will still need some volunteers to continue helping us next week. If available, on Tuesday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. , please contact me. Below are a few pictures of our monster building afternoon. Please return library books for exchange tomorrow.
Today's Learning: In Social Studies we continue to learn about community. We have learned today that there are three types of communities: urban, rural, and suburban. Today we made a class chart listing the characteristics found in each of these communities. In English, we have worked in groups to re-tell the story Anansi and the Pot of Wisdom. Students have begun to make individual story boards following criteria discussed in class. Students are learning to show comprehension as they add more details to the story board each time they re-tell the story. Here are a few pictures of this week's work. End of Year Library Book Return
In order to get prepare for the move to Glenmeadows, Mrs. O has requested that all library books be returned between June 4 and June 8th. Jump Rope for Heart This morning, we had our Heart & Stroke Foundation JUMP Rope For Heart assembly. We learned about the importance of heart health and the ways that skipping can provide a quick and effective fitness workout. Skipping activities will take place during Phys Ed classes, and we would like to offer the opportunity for students and families to fundraise online and collect donations for heart disease and stroke research. For students and families that may be interested in fundraising, students have received a donation envelope. For your convenience, there is also an online option for collecting donations. Please note that all donations will be due back to Rosscarrock School by Thursday May 31. Thank you for your support! How to get started 1. Visit JumpRopeForHeart.ca and Register for JUMP 2. Set up your personal fundraising page 3. Send donation request emails to friends, family and colleagues If you need assistance, please visit JumpRopeForHeart.ca and check out the instructional videos and step by step “how-to” resources. Today's Learning: Health We have been learning how to solve problems we encounter outside at recess. Today we used a real recess problem: " No, I don't want you to play. You always play together. I want to play with her only. You can play with someone else. I never get to play with her. " Sharing friends is sometimes hard. Today we tried to role play solutions to this problem. We came up with a few ideas. Please talk with your child at home about how they would go about finding a solution to this scenario. Math In Math, we have extended the question about how many fingers do 2 students have? 4 students have? etc. to a much bigger question: Hay 24 estudiantes en nuestra clase. Cada estudiante tiene dos manos. ¿Cuántos dedos hay en total en nuestra clase? (There are 24 students in our class. Each students has 2 hands. How many fingers in total are their in our class?) What are some strategies you could use to solve this problem? (You can post your answer to the blog or discuss at home. We will continue to work on this question tomorrow in Math.) On Monday we will have our annual Jump Rope for Heart Assembly for students.
A gentle reminder that on May 17th will be our Volunteer Tea and on May 18th is a P.D. day. There are a few families who have not paid for the field trip to Telus Sparks. Please contact myself or the office if you are not sure and we can confirm. The cost was $25. During our Telus Sparks field trip we attended two workshops: Sensory Wonders and Math in Motion. Some photos from Telus Sparks field trip earlier this week: A letter was sent home regarding head lice. Please read the information provided. Today's Learning: In English we have been learning about different types of book genres. This week we have been defining fiction and non-fiction. Over the next few weeks we will be further exploring how we can identify these two genres. On Tuesday we listened to the story Anansi and the Pot of Wisdom. Today we talked more about story tellers and their role in communities long ago before books were printed. After identifying the characters in the story and building comprehension, students worked with a partner to orally re-tell the story. Students can practice at home re-telling it to a family member. Telus Spark Field Trip Tomorrow
Tomorrow we will be going to our Telus Sparks field trip. It will be an all day field trip. Please pack a water bottle, morning snack and lunch. There will be no access to microwaves. On the field trip students will need to dress for the weather (tomorrow it might rain) and will only need to bring their lunch bag and water bottle. We will not be taking backpacks to the venue due to limited locker storage space. Students are encouraged to wear their Rosscarrock t-shirt or hoodie for safety as there may be multiple schools in the venue. Library We will have Library on Thursday morning. Please return books for exchange on that day. Home Reading As a result of our field trip tomorrow, please bring home reading to school on Wednesday instead of tomorrow. Today's Learning: We have begun to build our monsters this afternoon with a small group. Currently, we have no volunteers signed up this week to help. Next week, we will continue working on the project. In English we are starting a new story unit. Today students listened to a West African story called Anansi and the Pot of Wisdom. On Thursday we will work on re-telling the story orally in small groups and then will begin making story boards. Next week we will have lots of exciting things to look forward. If there are any volunteers who are available to help with our monsters in science next week, please let me know.

An invite was sent home today to parents who have volunteered this year for: school events, field trips and in the classroom . If by chance you've volunteered but did not receive an invite, please contact me. Today's Learning: Some students have begun to build their monsters today. There are few students who are revising their work to include 3-d shapes and some are finding creative ways to solve solutions for making a sphere shape. Today as some students began to build, our conversations were about using measurement to make the sides of shapes the same when cutting them and how to make the sides straight. I would like to invite parent volunteers to come to our classroom next week to help us continue our work. On Tuesday afternoon and on Thursday and possibly Friday depending on how things go. Please contact me if you're available to set up a day. Please talk with your child about materials they need. If there is something at home they can use, please send it.
